The production or fabrication of roof trusses is broken up into 4 stages. Here we will take you through all of these stages hoping it will give you a better understanding of the process.
1. Roof Truss Design
Before production can start you have to design the roof trusses. We make use of the latest technology provided by Mitek called 20/20. This is an engineered package that does all the hard work for us, making sure the roof trusses we manufacture is structurally sound. Once the design has been checked it is taken to the factory for the production process.
2. Picking of Timber
We make use of steel trolleys when picking timber for production. It helps with the flow of timber into the factory and to the tables. The timber picked is as per the job card that has been provided by the designer. Timber is picked by a Picker and his assistant to make absolutely sure the timber is picked as per the job card. Making roof trusses using incorrect material can result in structural failure.
Once the timber has been picked it is pushed on the trolleys into the factory where the saw operator stands ready to receive it. The timber is then placed one by one on the roller feeders ready to be cut. The design of the roof trusses is loaded onto the saw’s computer. The lengths and angles is determined by the computer making it extremely difficult for a human error. The accuracy of such a machine also improve the production period of the trusses. After the timber has been cut it is placed back onto the trolleys and pushed to the tables where the production team is receiving it.
At this stage the job cards come into play. The truss assembler team use the job cards to setup the profile of the trusses on the tables. The trusses are made precisely according to the job cards, which specifies which timber size and nail plate (connector plate) goes where. The overall height, span and pitch is specified on the job card and crucial to stick to during the fabrication process. As the trusses are temporarily assembled it is pushed along gravity feeders towards a roller press. Here the nail plates (connector plates) are rolled into the timber completing the production process.
As the roof trusses pass through the roller press they are inspected to make sure all the nail plates are thoroughly pressed into the timber. The trusses are then stacked onto each other and strapped together with tie-strap. This is to ensure they do not slide around when loaded onto the truck with the forklift. This batch is now ready to be delivered.
